Finally, cat thyme Teucrium marum produces another component that makes cats go a bit nuts: dolicholactone, chemically very close to nepetalactone. How cats respond to these various products differs from one individual to another.
Okay, this is weird. I was not aware that there are so many other plants that cats enjoy in this manner. Kitties are weird. Email Address. Some cats go nuts over catnip Nepeta cataria. Reportedly valerian was used by the Pied Piper of Hamelin, which celebrates June 26 as rat-catcher's day. Thanks for sharing!
I have seen Valerian in both the natural pet and human herbal aisles - sounds like a good way to take the edge off. We had a cat who loved cantaloupe. When she begged for it the first time I figured she just wanted whatever we were eating she was a food beggar in general but when I offered a bit to her she ate it enthusiastically. From then on, whenever we had cantaloupe I gave her a bit and she always loved it.
None of our other cats have ever had any interest, even when offered, but I've heard from other cat owners whose cats like cantaloupe--so it's unusual but not unknown.
Ah yes, cats and cantaloupe are an unexpected, but popular connection. My theory is that these little carnivores enjoy the flesh-like texture. A few of my kitties have also liked pumpkin, squash, and melons. I grow many kinds of weigela shrubs in my garden and have not seen any of my cats or other cats interacting with it, but I am going to keep an eye out for it now.
Here is Larry's blog post about it:. Question: My 7-year-old cat has discovered my weigela bush. I woke up at 2am with a bedroom full of bats. They could no longer get out easily, so they came in instead. There were about 40 of them. I spent the night in my car and called for help in the morning. After removing the bats from the house, I spent the next two years slowly finding holes and sealing them up.
It was a long process, but ultimately the bats are gone and the house is a lot less drafty than it used to be! No one has mentioned what I believe is or will soon be the most common reason for needing a safe - prescription medications. I have had addicted friends or family members steal meds from my home and my stepmother also lost meds this way.
I learned that the fire safes are useless for this. Pounded or dropped enough, they just fall apart. It is screwed into the wall studs from inside the safe.
My carpenter then hid it behind a mirror using a piano hinge that is not really visible from the front at all. I have tried to use a Magnetic Secret Latch system below to make it impossible to open the mirror, but I cannot figure how to make it work in my configuration. I would recommend it as a great way to hide a safe, however! If they just think your mirror is firmly attached to the wall, no one will find the safe behind it. I would use one latch at the top, and another at the bottom of the wall mirror.
If we remodel, I will have the carpenter work the magnetic latch into the design. We keep money, unused credit cards, and my pain meds and the dog's pain meds and dog's phenobarbital in the safe. Although it is digital, the safe does have a manual key and a battery-operated back up auxiliary pack for getting in if the internal battery dies.
