There is a general store in Lockhart River with groceries and supplies shipped from Cairns each week. Fresh bread, hot chickens, fruit, veggies, fresh meat as well as dry goods like flour, sugar, washing powder, and personal items like deodorant and shampoo are available. Lockhart River is the last east coast settlement before the tip, so you may want to stock up here before the trip to Weipa.
Petrol and diesel are available beside the general store via self-serve Eftpos facilities during store hours. Store hours are 8. It is always closed on Sundays and public holidays. The medical centre is equipped with experienced clinical nurses and from Tuesday to Thursday, there are visiting doctors. Lockhart River also has a police station, a primary school, a post office, a Council office, a library and an airport.
Flights to and from Cairns are available via SkyTrans on weekdays. For ladies, it is not culturally appropriate to wear revealing clothing such as bikinis, short shorts or low cut tops so please be respectful and dress appropriately. Visit the Lockhart River council to see which areas you are permitted to visit. Also talk to the locals about interesting places to visit. Lockhart River is a small aboriginal community currently under the alcohol management plan, which means that no alcohol is permitted in the community, and there is no alcohol available to buy in town.
If you are a bona fide traveller, you can have alcohol in your car, but it must be concealed and you can not drink, give or sell alcohol to anyone in town. Heavy fines apply if you do not abide by these rules. Greenhoose is outside of the alcohol restricted area of the Lockhart River Indigenous Community, therefore we are not governed by the alcohol management plan.
Saying this, only guests of the Greenhoose can drink alcohol here. We do not permit guests or staff to bring visitors to drink alcohol.
The business thrived in his absence. Until the mission started we were still free to live our traditional way. Bishop Newton asked the Government to plan the set up a mission on the Pascoe River reserve. However, as the proposed mission was on a mineral belt, Bishop Davies who replaced Bishop Newton requested a change of site and the government agreed to transfer the reserve to the Lockhart River region where there were no leases.
The mission was moved in to Bare Hill which had better long term prospects. This was a difficult time when people were denied freedom of movement to access their country and were forced to live permanently with comparative strangers and, in some cases, enemies. By January , Rowan reported more than 80 Aborigines at the mission. High infant mortality in the previous decade meant the number of children was small, but a school was started by the end of In , a church was under construction and cutting sandalwood was still the main income for the mission.
During the early s, Rowan tried cotton, bananas, pawpaws, cassava, sweet potatoes and taro. A new launch was obtained so fish, dugong and turtle as well as garden produce sustained the mission. An Act passed in that gave the Queensland Government the right to move Aborigines at will. By only a few Aborigines in the north-eastern area remained in traditional lands. That same year, 80 older Aborigines were removed from the Coen, Port Stewart, and Batavia districts to the mission.
In , the mission had a population of but 35 lives were claimed by whooping cough in The mission was re-established in , with H Johnson as Superintendent. To try to establish community spirit, Johnson changed the structure from a series of sub-villages representing tribal grouping to a single settlement. Small scale trochus fishing and other commercial activities were established. Click on the name of a place to go to the Bonzle page for that place.
