Preoperative assessment how long before surgery

Provide verbal and written information about your admission to hospital, your surgical procedure, length of stay and discharge. How long will it take? You should allow at least 2 hours for your entire Pre-Operative Assessment appointment.

Your assessment with the nurse will normally last approximately minutes. When is the service available? Where are the services provided and how do I contact us? What do I do if I need an interpreter? Changing or cancelling your appointment in advance If you're unable to keep your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible, so we can rebook your appointment and give your original appointment to someone else.

At your appointment Your blood pressure, height and weight will be checked some of which may be undertaken by our Health Care Support Workers. Coming to the Pre-operative Assessment Clinic before you are admitted to hospital for your operation is very important. It means that any problems can be identified and resolved prior to your operation and it therefore reduces the risk of your operation being cancelled on the day of surgery. If you do not attend your pre-operative assessment appointment then your operation will be cancelled or postponed.

You cannot have your surgery unless you have been seen in the Pre-operative Assessment Clinic. Please bring with you any medicines that you are taking, such as tablets, eye drops or inhalers.

The pre-operative assessment nurse will take your blood pressure, pulse and temperature. You will also be weighed, your urine checked, and a pregnancy test may be done. She will also ask you questions about yourself and your general health, and talk to you about any arrangements you may need to make for when you get home after your operation.

The nurse will also give you an information leaflet explaining what happens when you come into hospital, and your care before, during and after your operation. This is so that you know what to expect and also to help you think about what arrangements you need to make for when you go home, for example, picking up children from school or arranging for someone to be at home for the first two weeks. The Pre-operative Assessment Clinic is predominately run by nurses but there may be a need for you to see a doctor and this will be arranged.

You'll be asked questions about your health, medical history and home circumstances. If the assessment involves a visit to the hospital, some tests may be carried out.

This is to check if you have any medical problems that might need to be treated before your operation, or if you'll need special care during or after the surgery. The tests you have will depend on what operation and the kind of anaesthetic you're having. This assessment will usually happen one or more days before your operation. Make sure you know the results of any previous tests, as well as all the medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements you take.

If your doctor has instructed you not to eat fast before the operation, it's important that you do not eat or drink anything — this includes light snacks, sweets and water. You need an empty stomach during surgery so you do not vomit while you're under anaesthetic.
